Saint Clare of Assisi was born in Assisi, Italy, around 1193 or 1194 into a wealthy and noble family. From an early age, she was known for her gentle spirit, devotion to prayer, and compassion for those in need. Though surrounded by comfort and privilege, Clare felt increasingly drawn toward a life centered not on status or possessions, but on God.

During her youth, the preaching and example of Saint Francis of Assisi began transforming the people of Assisi. Francis spoke passionately about humility, repentance, charity, and joyful poverty. His radical devotion deeply moved Clare, who sensed that she too was being called to surrender everything in order to follow Christ more completely.

On the night of Palm Sunday, Clare secretly left her family home and traveled to meet Francis and his companions at the small chapel of the Portiuncula. There, before the altar, she laid aside her noble garments and jewels as a sign of renouncing worldly prestige. Francis cut her hair, symbolizing her complete dedication to God and the beginning of a new way of life.

Her family was shocked and angered by her decision. According to tradition, relatives attempted to force her to return home, but Clare firmly refused. Clinging to the altar and revealing her consecrated hair, she demonstrated an unwavering commitment to her calling. Eventually, her determination prevailed.

Clare first stayed with Benedictine nuns before eventually settling at the Church of San Damiano, where she founded a new religious community devoted to prayer, simplicity, and complete reliance upon God. Many women joined her, including members of her own family. This community later became known as the Poor Clares.

Life at San Damiano was intentionally simple. The sisters embraced poverty, devoted themselves to prayer, cared for one another, and sought to imitate the humility of Christ. Clare became known for her wisdom, kindness, discipline, and profound holiness. For decades, she defended what became known as the “Privilege of Poverty,” insisting that her community possess no property and depend entirely upon divine providence.

One of the most famous events associated with her life occurred during a military threat against Assisi. Though seriously ill, Clare had the Blessed Sacrament brought before her and prayed fervently for protection. According to longstanding tradition, the attackers withdrew and the community was spared. This account has remained a powerful symbol of courage, faith, and trust in God’s protection.

Despite enduring years of illness and physical suffering, Clare remained joyful, steadfast, and devoted to prayer. She composed a Rule for her community emphasizing absolute poverty and contemplative living, becoming the first woman known to write a religious rule that received formal papal approval. Just two days before her death, approval was granted for the form of life she had defended for decades.

Saint Clare died on August 11, 1253, surrounded by her sisters in prayer. Only two years later, she was formally recognized as a saint because of the widespread reputation for holiness she had established during her lifetime and the lasting impact of her example.

Centuries later, her life continues to inspire millions around the world. Her story is remembered as one of courage, purity, sacrifice, humility, and unwavering trust in God—a witness that true greatness is found not in worldly power or possessions, but in faith, integrity, self-giving love, and steadfast devotion to truth.
