St. Pier Giorgio Frassati's Day
with ORO VALENTIO
July 4th
Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati’s Day, celebrated on July 4, honors a remarkable young Catholic whose joyful faith, adventurous spirit, and extraordinary generosity made his short life an enduring example of Christian holiness. Born in Turin, Italy, on April 6, 1901, Pier Giorgio grew up in a prominent and prosperous family, yet he chose to devote much of his time, energy, and personal resources to serving people who were poor, sick, lonely, or struggling.
Pier Giorgio was deeply devoted to the Eucharist, prayer, and the Catholic faith, but his spirituality was anything but withdrawn from everyday life. He was energetic, sociable, athletic, and especially passionate about the mountains. He loved hiking, climbing, friendship, laughter, and spending time outdoors. His life demonstrated that holiness does not require abandoning the joys of ordinary life; rather, those joys can become part of a life directed toward God.
His famous expression “Verso l’Alto” — “Toward the Heights” — became a fitting symbol of his life. Written on a photograph of him climbing in the mountains, the phrase came to represent not only physical ascent but the Christian calling to continually strive toward what is higher, nobler, and closer to God.
Pier Giorgio’s concern for others was intensely practical. As a member of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, he visited families in need, cared for the sick, gave away food and clothing, and often sacrificed his own comforts to assist others. Much of this charitable work was done quietly, without seeking recognition. When he died at only 24 years old on July 4, 1925, the enormous number of poor and working-class people who came to mourn him revealed to his family just how many lives he had touched.
A Life of Prayer and Sacrifice
Pier Giorgio Frassati was born in Turin, Italy, on April 6, 1901, into a wealthy and influential family. Although he grew up surrounded by privilege, he was deeply concerned for the poor and often gave away his own money, food, and belongings to help those in need.
As a young man, Pier Giorgio became known for his joyful personality, strong friendships, love of the mountains, and deep Catholic faith. He attended Mass frequently, spent time in prayer, and served the poor through charitable organizations such as the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. Much of his service was done quietly, without his family even realizing how many people he helped.
He also loved hiking, climbing, skiing, and spending time in the Alps with his friends. His famous phrase “Verso l’Alto” — “Toward the Heights” — came to represent both his love of the mountains and his desire to continually grow closer to God.
In 1925, Pier Giorgio became seriously ill with poliomyelitis. Even during his final days, he remained concerned about the poor people he had been helping. He died on July 4, 1925, at only 24 years old.
At his funeral, his family was astonished to see huge crowds of poor and working-class people who had come to honor him. His hidden life of generosity had touched far more people than they had known.
